WorkVine Knowledge Lab

Evidence-based knowledge for better people management.

WorkVine Knowledge Lab is WorkVine's knowledge platform for research into personnel and organizational issues. We develop knowledge for HR professionals, employers and managers. We bring together official data, legislation and regulations and scientific research with knowledge from practice.

We make it clear what is certain, what is interpretation and where organizations must make a well-considered choice.

In this way, the Knowledge Lab contributes to WorkVine's mission to better organize daily employee processes. Our research, analyzes and knowledge products can be used independently, regardless of which software an organization uses.

Our mission

Better choices start with clarity about what you know

Questions about people, work, and organizations may seem simple, but they quickly become complex in practice. A legal rule is not the same as a common interpretation. A survey result is not a ready-made solution for every organization, and what works in a large organization may not suit a small team.

WorkVine Knowledge Lab investigates personnel, organizational and work issues based on official data, legislation and regulations, scientific research, professional knowledge and practical experience. We assess the meaning and evidentiary value of each source within the investigated issue.

We develop knowledge for HR professionals, employers, managers and other professionals who want to understand what is demonstrably certain, what scope rules leave, where uncertainty exists and what considerations they have to make themselves.

The goal is not to reduce every issue to one general answer. The aim is to make the available knowledge, limitations and options so clear that professionals can act in a more substantiated manner.

People and expertise

Clear ownership of research and content

For each investigation, we make it clear who is responsible for the content, what expertise has been contributed and what interests or limitations are relevant to the interpretation of the results.

Content management of the Knowledge Lab

Rolf Hellemons

Rolf Hellemons is ultimately responsible for WorkVine Knowledge Lab. Together with his team, he coordinates the research questions, assesses the sources used and ensures that conclusions can be traced back to the available information and analysis.

He ensures the distinction between established facts, definitions, legal rules, scientific findings, practical knowledge, interpretations and choices that an organization must make itself.

If an issue requires additional expertise, the Knowledge Lab can involve an external expert. The name, expertise, concrete contribution and any relevant interests are then stated in the relevant research.

Sources and research method

From research question to substantiated insight

Our research process starts with a clearly defined question. We then collect, assess, and compare relevant sources. We explain which conclusions follow, which limitations apply, and where additional professional judgment is required.

  1. Start with primary and official sources

    Where possible we use legislation and regulations, official government information, public data and relevant scientific research.

  2. Check date, validity and scope

    We check when information has been published, whether it is still valid and to which organizations, situations or groups it actually applies.

  3. Supplement with relevant subject and sector sources

    We use sector and subject sources to better understand context and implementation. They are not automatically given the same weight as legislation, official data or scientific research.

  4. Keep practical knowledge recognisably separate

    Experiences from organizations can be valuable, but are not necessarily general evidence. We therefore mention it when an insight comes from practice.

  5. Making substantiation, contradiction and uncertainty visible

    Factual and verifiable statements are linked to the sources on which they are based. When sources contradict each other, are only applicable to a limited extent or provide insufficient clarity, we include that uncertainty in the conclusion.

How we interpret knowledge

In our analyses, we explain what information is used and where interpretation or organizational judgment is still required.

Fact
A verifiable determination that is supported by the source used.
Definition
The definition of a concept, including the source or context in which that definition applies.
Legal rule
An applicable standard with attention to scope, exceptions and topicality.
Interpretation
A substantiated interpretation that goes further than what the source literally states.
Practical choice
An organizational decision in which context, risk, feasibility and preference play a role.

Research principles

Principles for research and knowledge development

These principles determine how we define questions, assess sources, formulate conclusions and keep our knowledge up to date.

  • We first formulate the research question and make it clear what is and is not being researched.
  • Conclusions must follow logically from the sources used and the analysis described.
  • The nature, topicality, applicability and limitations of sources are taken into account.
  • Contradiction, uncertainty and missing information are not left out.
  • Commercial interests may not determine the outcome of an analysis in advance.
  • We do not claim any missing legal, medical, scientific or sector-specific expertise.
  • Our analyses do not replace professional advice when a specific situation requires it.
  • Research and knowledge products are updated when new information gives reason to do so.
  • Those responsible for the content and the experts involved are identified in a recognizable manner.

Transparency about the publisher

Commercial interests and substantive space

WorkVine Knowledge Lab is part of WorkVine. WorkVine develops a modular employee platform for daily employee processes. This relationship is not hidden and forms a relevant context for the knowledge that the Knowledge Lab develops.

Research and knowledge products must be independently usable, regardless of which software an organization uses. When WorkVine, a WorkVine product or other commercial solution is discussed, we make the relationship and commercial interest explicit.

The analysis must also be able to show that software is not necessary, that another approach is better suited or that WorkVine does not solve the problem being investigated. The commercial interest therefore does not determine the conclusion in advance.

The test in practice

The outcome is not predetermined

A study is only useful when the conclusion follows from the available information and not from a previously desired answer. An analysis of WorkVine Knowledge Lab must therefore also be able to end without a recommendation for software, with a limited conclusion or with the conclusion that additional expert advice is needed.

Based on the sources and analysis we should be able to conclude:

  • that an organization does not yet need new software;
  • that a spreadsheet may be sufficient in a simple situation;
  • that WorkVine does not solve a particular problem;
  • that legal or sector-specific advice from an expert is required;
  • that the available sources do not allow a firm conclusion.

Corrections and updates

Knowledge must remain verifiable and up to date

A possible factual error can be reported via contact@workvine.nl. Indicate which research or knowledge product it concerns, which passage must be assessed and which verifiable source supports the report.

We assess each substantiated report substantively. We correct demonstrable errors as quickly as possible. In the event of a change that materially affects the meaning or conclusion, we will clearly state what has been changed.

A difference in interpretation does not automatically mean that the content is factually incorrect. It may be a reason to describe the reasoning, uncertainty or limitations of a conclusion more clearly.

New legislation, more recent data, additional research or relevant practical insights may provide grounds for reassessing and updating a research or knowledge product.
